Hundson Mead is a wildflower meadow between the River Stort and the Stort Navigation. It is flooded during the winter when flocks of lapwings and golden plover visit. For 600 years, following the old tradition of Lammas, the hay is not cut until late July. This allows wild flowers to set seed and only then are cattle allowed in to graze.
Hunsdon Mead is managed jointly by the Essex and Hertfordshire Wildlife Trusts. For more information, see here. Go to our Gallery and Forum for more photographs and to post your comments and pictures. |
