The treescape of Herts & Essex is inevitably
dominated by the woodland that remains to us. Little remains to us
of the Great Forest of Essex, but we still have Epping and Hatfield Forests and the
banks of our rivers are often wooded too. in
Hertfordshire, we have magnificent beech woods where purple emperor butterflies
and rare orchids can also be seen. Our parks and
gardens are well planted with exotic and native trees as are many of our
streets. One of the best places for trees are along suburban
streets. There are ancient trees to be
found in quite ordinary places and you can participate in the
national Ancient Tree Hunt if
you are interested. For an introduction to trees, visit our Tree
Alphabet.
